What is the Aqiqah Qurban?
The qurban of 'aqiqah is a sacrifice performed in thanksgiving for the birth of a child and is considered sunnah in Islam. The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged this act of worship and advised his ummah to perform aqiqah qurbani for their children.
Aqiqah is performed with the intention of thanking Allah (swt) on behalf of the child born and with the intention that the child will live in good health and well-being.
In the hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.V.) said:
“Every child is like a hostage with the sacrifice of aqiqah; a sacrifice is performed on his behalf on the seventh day, he is named and his hair is shaved.”
(Tirmidhi, Edahi, 17)
Aqiqah qurbani is considered mustahab (good deed) in the Hanafi madhhab and sunnah in other madhhabs. Slaughtering an aqiqah qurban for each child born is both a means of placing the child under Allah's protection and a blessing. Aqiqah qurbani is slaughtered on the seventh day after the birth, but aqiqah qurbani can be performed even if this day has passed.
Aqiqah qurban is a special sacrifice that must be performed in accordance with Islamic principles. It is sunnah to perform the aqiqah qurban on the seventh day after the birth of the child. If this day is missed, the aqiqah qurban can be performed at a later date. Although the seventh day is the recommended day in Islamic sources, the aqiqah qurban fullfiled is not subject to a time limit.
It is not obligatory to slaughter the qurban of Aqiqah. The obligatory qurban in Islam is only the one performed on Eid al-Adha. Aqiqah qurbani, on the other hand, is considered sunnah muakkada. It is a very rewarding act of worship that the Prophet (PBUH) himself practiced and recommended to his Ummah. It is narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) that our beloved Prophet (pbuh) slaughtered aqîqah qurbân for our Prophets Hasan and Husayn, and in one of his hadiths he said: “Every child is like a pledge in exchange for the qurbani of aqîqah to be performed for him on the seventh day (of his birth).” (Tirmidhi, Edahi, 17)
In the Hanafi madhhab, the sacrifice of aqiqah is considered mustahab, that is, a recommended act of worship. In other sects, it is sunnah. Therefore, slaughtering aqiqah qurbani is not obligatory, but it is an important expression of gratitude for the child.
ll members of the family, neighbors, relatives and those in need can eat the meat of the Aqiqah qurban. In addition, the meat can be offered to guests and distributed widely and shared for charitable purposes. In this way, it encourages the blessing of the family and the community.
