What is the Shifa Qurban?
Shifa qurban is a special type of qurban slaughtered for people or loved ones who are struggling with health problems. Shifa qurban can be performed in the hope that the person will be cured of their illness or protected from a calamity. With the shifa qurban, which is slaughtered with prayers and intentions, health-related wishes are requested from the Prophet Allah. The prayers and intentions made while performing shifa qurban, which is considered Nafilah Qurban, are also suitable to be transmitted by proxy.
Our Prophet (s.a.w) said in a hadith;
“Protect your wealth with zakat, cure your sick with charity, and prepare prayers for calamity.”
Therefore, it is permissible to perform shifa qurban, knowing that the healing is from Allah and distributing the meat of the sacrifice to the needy, i.e. giving charity.
Shifa qurban is a special qurban that must be slaughtered in accordance with Islamic principles. Shifa qurban can be performed in times of illness or distress with the intention of seeking refuge in Allah (swt) for relief from that distress.
Shifa qurban is performed for the sake of Allah (swt), in order to ask Allah (swt) to relieve a sick or afflicted person of his or her condition. If the person is able, it is better to perform it himself. However, if he/she is unable to do so, he/she can appoint a Muslim and a person of sound mind as his/her substitute and fulfill it by giving power of attorney. For example, one can intend to perform this sacrifice for the sake of Allah, with the intention of being cured from material and spiritual diseases, or by mentioning the known disease and saying, “I am performing this sacrifice for the sake of Allah, in order to get rid of this disease and find healing”.
Those in Need A large portion of Qurban meat should be given to the poor and needy. This increases solidarity in society and reinforces the spirit of solidarity.
The Qurban Owner and His Family: The Qurban owner can benefit from the meat for himself and his family. Family members receive spiritual support through this act of worship.
Guests: Qurban can also be offered to guests on the day of or after the Qurban is performed. Hospitality is an important part of this act of worship, and while the meat of the Shifa qurban will be distributed to those in need, the qurban owner and his relatives can also benefit from this blessing.
